Unacceptable Verbage

This should probably come with a language warning. And a spam warning, I’m probably about to get all kinds of spam.

In the shocking aftermath of what satirical giant, The Onion, tweeted about a nine-year old on Sunday, the world seems to be reeling in reaction. Everything from it only being funny to call a nine year old a cunt because she couldn’t possibly be one yet, to it being because of her race. Of course it isn’t funny, not at all, to call a nine year old anything derogatory at all. And, as a Caucasian female, I don’t feel qualified to speak to the race issue. I cannot know if they would have said it about a white child star or not. What I do know is that they’d have never said it about a male child star.

B’s colleagues and subordinates are a rough and tumble crowd. I’m not sure how much sailor’s swear, but if it’s as much as our security forces troops, than I know they can turn the air blue from five hundred meters away. Anything goes. Or almost. Just a few weeks ago, one of B’s colleagues was called into their boss’ office to discuss his use of the word “vagina.” Not pussy, not cunt, but vagina. He’d been using it as, “don’t be such a vagina,” to egg people on. He got up in arms about it. Why shouldn’t he be able to say it and who would ever get offended. Since then, I’ve called him out every time he uses vagina, pussy, or even girl as an insult. What is insulting about being female? Why is it okay to use my gender as an insult?

We’re walking a dangerous path as a society. Both in thinking it’s okay to make a joke about a 9 year old in a sexual manner or call her a cunt and in thinking it’s okay in general to insult people using female anatomical terms.

Think about the common insults you know. Bitch. Cunt. Pussy. Son of a bitch. Ass-hole. Dick. Bastard. Of those, two are gender neutral (ass-hole and bastard), two are male oriented (son of a bitch and dick) and the others are all related to women. And, in relation to bastard and son of a bitch, both reflect more on the mother of the person than the person being insulted.

Why is this okay? Why is it okay to suggest that it is an insult to be female?

About texancountess

I find myself in the calming roar of the sea, floating gently on the foam of the breaking waves. Blue. Green. Gray. The colors of the sea mark the boundaries of my soul. The tumbled glass finds its polish under the relentless pounding of the waves upon the shore. Thus am I. Rough transitioning to polish, refinement ever a process, finding my niche in the storms of life.
